Firefighters Learn Living Saving Skills
Firefighters
from Fire Protection District #1 of West Feliciana Parish and surrounding
departments attended a two night class to learn both CPR and the uses of the new
AED's (Automatic External Defibrillators) that the department now has in place.
Earlier this year the fire district received four AED's through a grant from the Louisiana Firemen's Association, the American Heart Association and an anonymous donor. The grant also paid for two members of the department to be trained as CPR and AED instructors so that these two life saving skills could be taught here in the parish.
Capt. Robert Triche and Assistant Chief Walter Oliveaux both attended the instructor training provided through East Baton Rouge Parish EMS and have started a series of class that will be held throughout the parish.
The AED's have been placed on fire department units in Star Hill, Lake Rosemound, Weyanoke and Wakefield. The placement of the units in these areas allows the department to provide services to areas of the parish that may have longer response times from an ambulance service. The department hopes to receive more AED's through the grant program in the near future, but has also budgeted money incase the grants do not come through.
If you would like more information about the AED's or CPR training contact either the American Heart Association or the Fire District Office.
