Firefighters Make Great Stop

on Early Morning Blaze

Volunteer Firefighters from West Feliciana Fire Protection District #1 and the St. Francisville Fire Department stopped an early morning blaze at a residence on Hwy 10 on the morning Monday, December 3, 2001.

Twenty-two volunteer firefighters responded to blaze and through their quick response and professional efforts limited the damage to the rooms involved upon arrival.

Firefighters were notified of the fire around 6:30 a.m. and advised that fire was coming through the roof by West Feliciana Parish Sheriff J. Austin Daniel who arrived a minute later.   Firefighters entered the residence to find the attic and master bedroom fully involved in fire.  An aggressive attack of the fire stopped the fire's progress and limited damage to the attic and master bedroom.

Firefighters were able to use water from the pond in front of the house to fight the fire due to inadequate water supply from the public water system in the area.

Firefighters regularly train on drafting procedures due to the rural nature of the parish and the lack of adequate water supply and hydrants in many areas from the public water system.

Firefighters would like to thank Sheriff Daniel and his deputies who responded for their assistance throughout the firefighting efforts.  These efforts were a key part in the success of the attack on this fire.

The fire was determined to start in a Christmas tree that was in the master bedroom of the house.

Fire was through the roof when reported.

Fire heavily damaged the rear of the house.

The fire burned through the roof over the master bedroom.

Firefighters had to force their way into the residence.  Deadbolts due keep most people out, but not firefighters.

Firefighters quickly deployed salvage covers to limit damage to the contents of the building.

Damage to the front of the house was limited.

The front room and its furnishings had little to no damage thanks to efforts of firefighters.

You could still cook in this kitchen after the fire.

What is left of the culprit.

This is where the tree was sitting before the fire.

This door was closed during the fire and stopped the fire from spreading into other rooms of the house.

Fire was able to enter the attic of the residence through openings in the sheet rock on the ceiling like the air conditioner registers and the light fixtures.

Damage to the attic was heavy.  Firefighters had to extinguish several spot fires in the attic.

Damage to the front half of the roof could have been a lot worse.
